Blue Runners

Once thought of as a nuisance, fishermen throughout south Florida are quickly learning how valuable these hard swimmers can be. Blue runner, hard tail, yellow mackerel, jack, or just plain old runner, whatever you call this frisky little fish, its definitely in the winners circle as a top bait.

For starters lets talk about the blue runners characteristics. Generally swimming in packs these voracious eaters will tear apart just about anything they can sink their teeth in. Crabs, shrimp, small baitfish, and a variety of crustaceans are all on the blue runners menu. Feeding both during daylight and nighttime hours one must wonder if their only objective is to eat!

With the real big boys reaching a few pounds (Florida State Record 7 lbs), blue runners fight as if they are made of pure muscle. Even the palm sized small ones put up a hefty tug — any fisherman will tell you how enjoyable it is catching these guys on ultra light tackle. From January through August, mature (9”-12”) blue runners will head offshore to spawn. Their young form schools, which associate with floating debris that they use as shelter. Swimming in the open, juveniles would be easy pickings for a variety of game fish thus structure even from day one is extremely important. Tiny runners have even been observed hiding in the bell of jellyfish.

Once they find their way inshore, runners will inhabit just about every piece of structure they can find. Wrecks, reefs, ridges, rubble, bridge pilings, jetties, and concrete sea walls all make for an excellent habitat. Runners can even be found on sandy bottom shorelines harassing tiny baitfish — so finding a location to target blue runners is not very difficult. For a sure fire method try anchoring over any piece of structure in depths of 10-30. Position your boat directly over or right next to the structure and immediately throw a chum bag over the side.

With their keen sense of smell blue runners respond to chum almost instantaneously so keep a sharp eye on the slick. If there are any in the area they will be swarming behind your boat in 5 minutes or less. Catching these bad boys can be done with either a sabiki (multiple hook bait rig) or a single hook baited with a small chunk or squid strip. I prefer the second method, as two or more runners on your sabiki going in different directions will destroy the rig. A 6, 8, or 10lb test spinning outfit will do the trick with either method. Simply feed out the bait at the same rate as the chum is drifting & youre in! With a strong current add a small split shot to keep the bait in the strike zone.

Within an hour your well should have more than enough hardy baits for a day of live bait fishing. In the rare event you have a hard time locating runners try slow trolling very small drone spoons behind a 2-4 oz. torpedo sinker while zig-zaging from 8-20. As live bait, the blue runner is definitely hard to beat. They are extremely strong swimmers that just never seem to quit and seem to be on everyones menu. Kingfish, dolphin, sailfish, wahoo, marlin, tuna, and large grouper all find a frisky blue runner irresistible. Not to mention what extremely effective swordfish baits large blue runners make.

The most common rigging technique is to bridle the bait as to not hamper its swimming ability. This can be done with rigging floss, a small rubber band, or our preferred method, with a tiny wire tie.

Due to their strength and stamina the blue runner also makes an excellent bait for slow trolling off a flat line or downrigger. Remember to fish wire leader on the deep baits to prevent bite offs from toothy critters.

A large live well with a powerful pump will surely help keep the baits in top shape. During nighttime hours throw a cyalume light stick into the well, which will make catching the baits easier and help prevent injured baits. With the cost of quality live baits, a little time and effort on your part will go a long way when it comes to blue runners.

Of note, dont shy away from live lining a BIG (2lb-3lb) runner. Smoker kings have a fancy for giant runners. Just remember to use a stinger rig on the larger baits.
