possibilities than ever before. Join us for a taste of a typical
two-day offshore adventure, and see for yourself if long-range reef
fishing is for you.
As I finished the plate of breakfast, I
heard someone outside the door cheer, and then I heard the unmistakable
sound of a hefty fish slam the deck. I downed my orange juice, stood
up, and stepped out into the beautiful June morning. Another voice
could be heard muttering, “I’m in! Good fish!” Immediately I pulled my
rod from the rack, ran to the rail, baited up, and dropped a frenzied
pinfish into the deep, clear blue water where it soon disappeared into
the 200 foot depths.

The straight up scoop on slaying Space Coast smokers
When most folks think about the Florida Space Coast, they picture
Kennedy Space Center, or recollect that old television series I Dream
of Jeannie, or perhaps they visualize lines of retired folks boarding
cruise ships. However, these images aren’t everything. To savvy king
mackerel fishermen, Port Canaveral on Florida’s Space Coast is a
perfect place to head to when big “smoker” size kingfish are the
primary target- just ask any professional kingfishermen.

Is Islamorada emerging as a viable blue marlin destination worthy
of consideration? The experienced crews at Whale Harbor Marina in the
heart of the fabulous Florida Keys say it sure is.
Fishing for blue marlin is not an aspect of our varied sport
suitable for every single angler. It requires a commitment to achieving
the clear objective at all cost. Passing up debris loaded with big
dolphin, and resisting the urge to race inshore to the edge of the reef
where you know you can put together a solid catch of bottom fish for
the dinner table when offshore fishing is slow is definitely not for
everyone.

With ferocious feeding habits, nearly unparalleled fighting abilities, and quality table fare, it’s time for blue-water anglers to treat this striped blue-water bandit with respect!
As you come off plane and ease into a trolling pattern, the Gulf Stream
seems like an endless shimmering sapphire carpet. Bright yellow-green
squares of seaweed lines and rafts pop into view as they rise on the
crests of each passing wave. You edge your vessel towards what seems
like the largest mass of Sargassum- it appears to stretch at least one
hundred yards.

Are mako sharks making a big enough showing along Southeast Florida’s prolific swordfish grounds for a viable fishery? Evidence proves they very well may be… It started as just another exciting swordfish adventure. Like so many evenings before, we departed Hillsboro Inlet and ran twenty something miles to the southeast. Our plan was to fish a consistently productive stretch recognized on nautical charts as ‘Hollywood Hills.’ After spending a few minutes determining our exact drift, we repositioned and set a spread of inviting swordfish baits just prior to the sun setting over the western horizon.

A pictorial tribute.
This year’s spring dolphin season has already etched its position in record books as the season with the outstanding number of gargantuan dolphin, and it’s barely June. So many respectable fish in the thirty to fifty pound range have been brought to the scales over the last couple of months, that bragging about a forty pound trophy nowadays barely raises an eyebrow.

Is lack of public access taking a big bite out of sport fishing? It’s a crisis, but are we doomed? That’s what Florida anglers and charter captains want to know as they have more and more trouble finding places to dock and launch their boats.

It was a long, smooth ride across seemingly endless miles of Gulf of Mexico water, all of which appeared exactly the same to the out-oftown paying angler. Finally reaching the intended destination well after sunrise, the skipper of the chartered boat pulled back the throttles to a suitable trolling speed. As if on cue, the deckhand went about the business of deploying a rich pattern of colorful baits.

My anticipation runs high with every fishing trip- Imagine my excitement prior to a full blown adventure out to the Gulf Stream. Im ruined for weeks. I cant sleep, I cant focus on work, and my wife and kids watch me stumble around the house for days, mumbling about tuna and dolphin and fumbling through my gear fifteen times a night. Finally, right before my wife is completely convinced I need to see a psychiatrist; the day of the trip arrives.
