Phony Baloney

When live bait is not available, swimming plugs are the perfect alternative. Bomber Long-As, Rapala X-Raps and Yo-Zuri Live-Bait Series are just a few of the many lipped lures that can be cast or slow trolled along weed lines, floating debris and current rips. With the endless supply of color and size combinations, swimming plugs perfectly mimic local forage species and do a terrific job of enticing exciting surface strikes. Just be sure the hardware on your swimming plug is up to the task.

Dolphin Beware

Go Small or Go Home

When dolphin are gorging on two-inch glass-minnows, quarter-size triggerfish or any other variety of tiny baitfish, including a pair of small lures in your trolling spread could make all of the difference. Just don’t be too surprised when the two tiny baits get nailed time and time again! Even the smallest ¼, 3/8, or ½ oz. bucktails work perfect as they dart back and forth at the tail end of the white water. Root-beer colored D.O.A. TerrorEyz and similar soft bodied jigs shouldn’t be overlooked either. No matter how small the lure, don’t be under the misconception that dolphin won’t be able to find it. These magnificent predators have been blessed with phenomenal hunting skills including exceptional eyesight.

Shimmering Showers

Working on the principle that splash, vibration and commotion attract attention, as you drift down the edge with kites flying high; a raw-water washdown system sprayed over the side will pique the interest of nearby schoolies. Simply turn on the hose and either lay it over the gunwale where the water makes a constant splashing sound, or spray the shower farther out to create the illusion of a shimmering school of baitfish. The sound of the water slapping the surface will travel far and wide and thus, will invite curious fish from a considerable distance. With live baits dangling on the surface, the combination is lethal.
