If I were somehow limited to fishing with only one artificial lure, it would surely be the white bucktail. Whether skimming across the flats of Flamingo in search of snook, redfish and trout, deep jigging Palm Beach wrecks for grouper and back-breaking AJs, or scouting weed-lines off Miami in search of exciting blue water action with colorful dolphin, white bucktail jigs reign supreme. Comprised of not much more than a lead head and hairy body, the bucktail jig has proven effective in nearly every marine environment and in nearly every weather and sea condition. The reason is simple; the bucktail jig is ingeniously designed. It is extremely versatile and when retrieved with the proper erratic action, mimics a vast array of baitfish. What that means to me and you is that any one of a nearly endless number of predators that eats baitfish; eats a bucktail! I like to think of the white bucktail as the “Superbait” of all artificials – deadly in its own right, yet even more effective when coupled with a little color or added feature. Even alone, the white bucktail is nearly perfect. Go ahead and tell me one other artificial lure than can be cast, trolled, jigged, crawled along the bottom, ripped across the surface, worked on a flat, cast off a bridge or pier, fished offshore, you name it, the bucktail can do it! Add in the fact that the already versatile lure can easily be modified for different actions and sink rates based on how and where it will be used, and it is easy to see why with its expanded range of applications, the white bucktail does, in fact, hold the title of, “The most versatile artificial lure.”
