With the end of the year rapidly approaching and water temperatures continuing to fall, ambitious anglers anxious to fish the islands can expect two things with some level of certainty.
First, as the year comes to an end, strong northerly winds associated with approaching cold fronts will sometimes make it nearly impossible to safely cross the Gulf Stream – especially for small to mid-size center-consoles with little to no protection from the elements. This means that all crews intending on making the crossing must keep close tabs on current and upcoming weather conditions. Pick and choose your days wisely as pounding through angry seas for 50-plus miles is no fun for anyone.
Secondly, if this season is anything like years past, by the time New Year’s Eve comes and goes, the drag-screaming, line-melting, rod-bending wahoo bite should be in full swing! There really is no secret tricks-of-the-trade for this fishery. Sure, tournament winning crews do have their nuances, but as long as you focus your high-speed trolling (12-18 knots) efforts in 200 to 500 feet of water along any steep drop-off around any of the popularly visited islands, you should have no problem boxing a few quality fish. Just remember; when you think you’re trolling too fast, bump it up a couple more knots! As long as the lures remain in the water, you’ll never outpace super fast wahoo!
