Central Bahamas Fishing Forecast:  Andros, New Providence, Eleuthra, Cat Island and the Exumas As seen in the Nov / Dec Issue

The fishing forecast for the Central Bahamas is equally as exciting. We’ll start off on the east side of Andros Island directly in the Tongue of the Ocean. At Small Hope Bay Lodge, Jeff Birch (242.368.2014) reports pretty much the same thing as captains in the northern region of the island chain – wahoo, wahoo and more.wahoo.

The offshore fishing - if that is what you call it when you’re only a few minutes from shore - will begin to yield more and more quality wahoo as well as the occasional scattered dolphin and tuna around the navy buoys. Look for whatever seabirds are left in the area to point the way to the highly-prized game fish. Flats fishing in all of the creeks and flats meandering across Andros will remain phenomenal throughout the holiday season which happens to be an excellent time to visit this breathtaking piece of paradise.

Over in Nassau on New Providence, Captain Johnny Pratt on My Time (242.422.0364) is looking forward to working the north side of the island in search of big ‘hoos. To the northeast over at Harbour Island which could very well be labeled the yellowfin tuna capital of the entire Bahamian Island chain, Captain Jeff Fox aboard Top Cat (954.727.5743) is looking forward to the cooler winter weather. He claims that down around James Point, the winter wahoo bite should be super strong along the steep edges in 200 feet to 400 feet of water. Just to the north, the Shallow Grounds is another area worth checking out as well. He recommends holding on tight as there will certainly be some triple-digit trophies taken in these forage-filled waters.

Down on the west side of Eleuthera is Cape Eleuthera, where Stephen Kappeler of the Cape Eleuthera Resort & Yacht Club claims the wahoo bite will be incredible...how surprising. Like the southern side of Grand Bahama, this stretch, too, is well protected from gusty northerly breezes. During periods of calm weather, venturing out to Little San Salvador will provide opportunities to connect with monster wahoo around the world-renowned ‘Bridge.’ Kappeler also said to keep a sharp eye out for gaffer dolphin and splashing tuna which may pop up at any time as these species, too, are still lurking in the area. Last but not least, locals say the deep-dropping down to 1200 feet continues to yield deep water denizens of prehistoric appearances.

Across the Exuma Sound at Staniel Cay Yacht Club is where Captain Tony Grey (242.355.2024) reports a few scattered dolphin and tuna. But as the winter season progresses, both of these species will definitely be overshadowed by the fantastic wahoo bite.

Hawks Nest, Cat Island is where JR Holder (242.342.7050) also says that the highly anticipated wahoo invasion will soon be in full swing. These indiscriminate killers will be destroying anything they can catch right out front of Columbus Point. Work the edge!
