Southern Bahamas Fishing Forecast: San Salvador, Long Island, Crooked Island, Mayaguana and Inagua

The southern reaches of the Bahamian Island archipelago is definitely not for everyone. Unless you’re flying in - which is definitely a well worthy option - only well outfitted sportfishers with plenty of fuel capacity will be making this long trek. This region is however, well worth visiting as this is truly the undisputed trophy wahoo capital of the world.

More hundred plus pound fish have been landed in this region then anywhere else on the globe. This is also where visitors will find Rum Cay, where Captain Jay Engleder reports that the stretch around the northeast and southeast part of the island is where the offshore bite will be off the Richter scale. There will be plenty of trophy fish taken in the high double digits with a few even bigger than that.

Let us also not forget about Long Island where world famous Stella Maris Resort is situated. Here is where legendary James Docky of Bonafide Bonefishing (800.426.0466) is ready for cooler temperatures and hot fishing. Docky is a bonefish guru but will be the first to tell you that these prolific flats hold a wide array of hard fighting light tackle species including mutton snapper, barracuda, and an array of shallow water swimming sharks. Variety is definitely the name of the game for both fly fishermen and spin casters alike.

In closing, all of here really hope the Bahamian government finally relaxes the strict amendments to the fishing regulations implemented earlier this year. We’ve heard over and over again that changes are in the works, yet, as of this writing, nothing has changed. Locals throughout the island chain will attest that way too many rooms are unoccupied and way too many boat slips are empty as a result of the severe measures. Something has to be done, and soon!
