Mosquito LagoonI had the pleasure of taking AJ Pereira of Longwood Florida out after some Mosquito Lagoon redfish before he starts college next week at the University of Central Florida. The morning started off slow with the heavy cloud cover keeping the sun under wraps. We started by sitting back on the edge of a flat that had been holding great numbers of fish and after a dismal number of shots at fish I decided to go looking for some. I poled down a shoreline and spotted two reds with their backs out of the water moving away from the boat working down the leeward shoreline. I put the poling on high and managed to get close enough to reach the fish with a well placed cast. AJ took an over handed swing and the wind caught the line and the bait landed short. I told him to make a side arm cast to keep the bait out of the wind and the shot landed perfectly. With a small twitch the redfish interest was peaked and they both moved in to take the bait. The redfish circled and swirled searching through the mud and grass looking for the bait until with a blast one fish shot off. The line stayed limp as we watched the wake from the redfish move up the flat. The red was spooked by the fishing line that brushed across the fish as he circled the bait. Fortunately the second redfish didn’t follow his partners lead and settled down instead. AJ cranked the reel handle two times moving the bait ever so slightly and the lingering red zeroed in on the bait and slurped it up. After a couple of nice runs and a spin around the boat AJ had his second redfish and largest of his life boat side. We ended the day with four nice redfish even with the lack of visibility due to the stiff wind and lack of sun. Congratulations to AJ on landing some nice redfish and I hope a day like this one on the water will get him ready for a great college career. Post Script: Good luck to everyone and be safe as we all brace ourselves for what looks to be our first hurricane of the season. Capt. Mike Ortego
