Greetings from Ocean City NJ: I drove up here on Sunday and then went fishing with my friend Chuck Furimsky just off of the 9th street beach early on Monday morning. After we cleared the inlet we began seeing birds diving in close to the surf, we headed up the beach until the bottom machine showed solid fish from top to bottom (we were in 14 feet of water). Birds were diving and the small silver side bait was balling up under Chuck's Sea Craft, Chuck handed me a 5 weight fly rod with a 200 grain streamer express line, to cast with. I tied on a small #4 white bait fish pattern and made a cast, 10 seconds later I hooked my first Weakfish of the day.
Birds were diving, baitfish were jumping, while the Weakfish and Bluefish were eating them as fast as possible. Chuck made a cast and he caught his first Bluefish. These fish were small, 8 to 15 inches but they were lots of fun on the 5 weight fly rods.
After we each caught a couple of dozen Weakies and a dozen and a half dozen Blues we took off to go look for Sharks or Tuna. By noon the wind came up as we found some larger Bluefish however it was now blowing over 20 knots so we headed to the dock after a fun morning of fly fishing.
I would like to find some of these Gray Trout when they grow up! Tonight I will be presenting a program on catching Billfish on fly to the Coastal Flyrodders of New Jersey, Tomorrow I will be fishing with my friend Gary Caputi out of central Jersey for Tuna on fly. Then I will be back in Ocean City present the same program to the Fly Anglers of NJ at the Bayside Center in Ocean City. Stay tuned for more fishing reports in a couple of days.
