July 14th, Lake St. Clair Fishing Report From The Michigan Side
ALEX’S FISHING DAY,
MY grand son Alex left today for a 3-week trip to CHINA as a guest of the Chinese Government. He was selected to go with 300 US invited young People to visit China before the Olympics. This is to introduce him to China and their young people. To meet and make friends with. He’s on his way today, nervous but excited. What a great opportunity!!!!!!!!!!!! He was invited to Sail on what would have been his first Mackinaw to Port Huron Sail Race starting today too. There’s next year for that.
I invited him to go fishing with me on Friday and bring some of his friends too. Alex, Reid Dixon, and Sammy Barbour along with my son Chris. We made the trip to the Canadian side of Lake St. Clair.
Seemed a little rough as the winds were up early in the morning. Golden Streaker cut thru this and we arrived at my favorite place on the Canadian shore. We started catching some nice Smallmouth Bass and the winds calmed down. After everyone caught their limit of bass, the young men were anxious to battle a Muskie.
After a quick lunch we started to troll and within a few minutes the clicker on one rod started to sing out., I hadn’t even put out all the lures yet. Reid grabbed the rod and Sammy and Alex reeled in the other two rods . The big fish jumped up, as is typical on the hook up.
Reid was excited as this was his first Muskie on the troll. All of a sudden Reid announced the fish was gone. No!!! He wasn’t I said, he’s just swimming at the boat to attack us. WOW!!!! Reid reeled in like mad and caught up to this one. After a small battle we were able to net this big boy. Carefully we unhooked the lure and gave Reid the fish for a quick picture. Then replaced the fish in the water and let water run thru his gills. After a few minutes he gave a quick flip of his tail and swam off tired but alive and healthy.
I then started to get all the Muskie lures out and troll this area. We trolled for another hour with no action. Alex was in charge of the rods on the starboard side of the boat and Sammy was on the Port side. We started to reel in the lures to call it a day and boogie on home when zing!!!!! went a reel. This was Sammy’s side of the boat. He quickly grabbed this rod and was hooked up. We all pulled in the rest of the rods and let him have has his battle with Mr. Muskie.
Sammy took his time and finally brought this big boy to the boat. Alex quickly netted him and we released the lure. Gently handing this Muskie to Sammy. Proceeded to take a few pictures and again held this fish over the side to allow him to get a good flow of water thru his gills, before releasing him. He swam off with a quick flip of his tail. Sammy got hand shakes from his buddies as this his first ever Muskie too. Wait till he tells the story to his sailing buddies on the Mackinaw Race tomorrow.
We boogied on home with some really happy anglers. Just look at the grin on their faces in the pictures. What a great day on the Lake St. Clair with my Son, Grandson, and his friends, this makes fishing a real treat
