Captain Pete Greenan July 16th, 2008 Gypsy Guide Service Fishing Report

Tarpon and snook have been our prime targets this week.  Tarpon are still showing well along the beaches of Gasparilla Island adn Cayo Costa.  Other pods of tarpon are scattering throughout the back country from Pine Island Sound to upper Charlotte Harbor. Most fish are in small groups or are singles. Best flies have been Ron's Greenan Weenie, a yellow Puglisi, or a large black Seaducer style pattern. Snook are showing well in the back country where ever there is a good tidal flow.  Most spots are in areas close to the passes.

Many fish are still staging on the beaches prior to the cooler weather of the fall.  Harry Davis and Fen Satorius from Santa Fe, NM took tarpon to 100 lbs. near Sand Fly Key.  Jim Leiner of New York caught a bull shark between 175 and 200 lbs. in Turtle Bay.  The shark broke his rod and he proceeded to land the fish with only two guides left. Ron Whiteley of Rotunda landed a 130 lb. tarpon in Turtle Bay in only 15 minutes.  Ron uses 80 lb. test line on his fly rod and really knows how to land big fish.

Dusty Sprague of North Port jumped a neat forty pound tarpon in Pine Island Sound south of Rocky Channel. Numerous snook were taken in the off hours during these trips.  Fishing will continue to produce good catches of tarpon and snook.  Redfish are already beginning to show signs of schooling.  We observed several very large redfish on the flats this week.  Cobia are hit or miss in the upper harbor.  the good weather predicted for the coming week should help with good catches of all the local species.

Fish Hard,
Capt. Pete Greenan
