What makes inshore light tackle fishing so special? Is it the variety of species an angler can pursue? Is it the awesome scenery? Is it the anticipation of the one-on-one battle that every angler looks forward to?

Rainy Day Redfishing                

As I sit here watching the rain come down from Tropical Storm Fay with no electricity, I am gaining a little more respect for Mother Nature and her furry.  It seems like it was  just yesterday when I sat in my house for 10 days without any power because Mother Nature decided she was going to have three tropical systems pass right over the my quite home town of Crystal River.  Boy those were the days barbecuing everyday, running around looking for ice so that you could always have a cold beer, sweating while you sleep because there is no air conditioning.  AH! Those were the days.

Who am I kidding? No air conditioning sucks and when it’s hot and muggy you’re always miserable.  Although tropical systems are no fun I still enjoy a few rain showers from time to time.  As hot as it gets in August and September a little rain shower will never hurt anything.  Some of my very best fishing days have came before, after or during the rain.  If you think about it fish tend to bite better with slow changes in the barometer and the rain tends to cool water temps down more often than not.  This past week was a perfect example of that.  I started the week fishing in water temps that hovered around the mid 80’s.  After fishing a few days with a.m. and p.m. storms the water temps dipped way down toward the mid 70’s.  Drops like this tend to get fish extremely excited and more often than not the BITE will usually turn on.

This past week was one of the best weeks of fishing I have had all year.  My clients and I caught tons of Reds, Trout and even a few rare Snook.  Early in the week I had the great opportunity to take Ron and Terri Reid fishing.  We started the morning fishing for HUGE Reds using cut bait.  After catching a few early in the morning the rain set in and drove us back into the river to fish a few sheltered areas.  To my amazement a few nice Reds and Black Drum also ran into the river seeking shelter from Mother Nature’s wrath.  But my awesome rainy days didn’t stop their.  Danny Luin and I fished a few days later with 25+ mph winds and huge rain squalls passing over all day.  Our persistence paid off and we landed over 25 Redfish all well within the slot and we even managed to land a 16lb 36” MONSTER.  What a day and What a catch!
