July 3rd, 2008  Tampa Bay area fishing report

 Changes in Tampa Bay are underway!

Fishing has changed, but overall, it has remained awesome!  Over the next few weeks it’s going to continue to change bit by bit.  I do know one thing for sure… in about two weeks the bait will be very plentiful!  You will be able to find more bait than you would ever need because the small bait has moved in the area and its growing quickly.

            Redfish have been a bit tougher to catch the last few weeks, but that is changing. More redfish are starting to show up mostly mixed in with snook.  There are many scattered redfish, but the schools of redfish are also starting to appear.  Redfishing should continue to get better over the next couple of weeks.  Around this time each year redfish are usually a bit harder to catch, but this year has definitely been the hardest of all.  When we have invested a fair amount of time into catching redfish we have managed to catch them, but it sure did take some hard work to do so.

            The snook bite is hot and we’ve caught some great fish.  Take a look at the picture… that is a great snook.  We’ve seen a number of fish roughly the same size as the one in the picture.  We’ve hooked some, lost some, and caught some.  The snook in the photo is one of the biggest snook we’ve caught so far this season.  The numbers of snook we’ve caught has been great as well.  This time of the year, snook tend to stay in big schools making it easy to catch big numbers of them.

            The amount of tarpon we caught last week wasn’t that great, but the size of the fish we caught made up for it.  The tarpon that we did hook or catch last week were huge.  Many tarpon moved offshore recently, but over the next week, some of them will come back and some new fish will possibly come out of hiding.

            If you are looking for a big fish to catch, shark fishing has been great.  Currently, there are more sharks in Tampa Bay than I’ve ever seen in the past.  Most of the sharks we’ve caught were caught while we were fishing for tarpon in shallow water.  I can only imagine how many sharks there are in deeper water.  Please visit www.castawaychartersinc.com and book your trip today!
