44 Hour Middle Grounds Report

Friday May 2nd

The Viking Superstar returned today to a dock full of anglers from Southeastern Tackle Liquidators anxious to see the catch!

Captain Carl reports that the Superstar had another fantastic trip to the famous Florida Middle Grounds! He mentioned that: things started off slow.  We were picking away at mangos and red groupers, but for the first couple hours of the trip, we had to fight the porpoises for every fish! A pod of 12 of them were terrorizing us, so, we took a 10 mile ride at 18 knots and managed to lose them. Once we did, we found some nice gag groupers, red groupers, scamp groupers, mangrove snappers, and porgies that were biting! We picked away steadily all day, with gags to 28 pounds coming over the rail! Once the sun set, the mangos started biting again, well, as well as more gags and red groupers all through the night. Many anglers had their snapper limits. Then on Sunday when the sun came up, we tried a few more spots and got a few more grouper. Our last stop was a wreck, and we caught a few Amberjacks on it. We saw them swimming on the surface, but they weren’t too interested in eating.

Daniel Cheek of Naples, FL took the snapper pool with a beauty 7.5 pound mango. Wally Sobek of Bradenton, FL took the Amberjack pool with a nice 24 pounder. The grouper pool was split in half, with two equal weighing fish... one a Red Grouper caught by John Guskey of Lakeland, FL...and the other a gag grouper caught by Dave Sobek of Chicago, IL. Both fish weighed in at 26 pounds! Good Job Guys!

We are just about to head back out to the Grounds with the Southeastern Tackle Liquidators group on the Viking Superstar. We will be back on Tuesday afternoon, so stay posted for another report!
