“Organization” is the key to angling success!
There are different kinds of fishermen across Florida. Some have been reeling in trophies for decades, whiles others only dream of catching the “big ones.” Many anglers prefer serene backcountry settings, while others are addicted to the adrenaline rush and limitless bounties of the deep blue. Regardless of experience or preference, some things are a certainty; the right equipment and an organized tackle system lead to angling success.

AS SEEN IN THE MARCH/APRIL 2007 ISSUE
Do your part as a concerned angler to insure the future
success of this prolific fishery.
If the decision were mine, I would
say dolphin are the perfect blue water target. Studies have shown this highly
pelagic species is capable of reaching four feet in length and a weight of 40
pounds in less than 12 months! When you combine this astonishing growth rate with
their aggressive behavior, brilliant coloration, stunning aerial acrobatics and
favorability on the dinner table, it is easy to see why the species is the most
targeted of all pelagic predators.

Follow
these simple steps and never lose an anchor again.
Go ahead and name the one topic that every boater at one
time or another has been frustrated by. The answer will always be the same -
anchoring. Regardless if you’re a near-shore bay fisherman or an offshore
sinker-bouncer, the act of anchoring and all of its associated hardware –
dubbed “ground tackle” - plays a huge roll in the game that we play. Without
it, it would impossible for us to maintain our position over prime habitat
where we’re able to put together such fine catches of tasty snapper, grouper
and other highly desirable bottom dwellers

The twist on micro-swivels |
|
|
|
|
AS SEEN IN THE MARCH/APRIL 2005 ISSUE
Most
inshore anglers believe that large, bulky swivels impede casting
accuracy, spook fish, and can lead to unnecessary cut-offs. This
philosophy may have held merit in the past; however thanks to new
developments in technology, a downsizing tendency has influenced the
terminal tackle industry to produce a new crop of micro-swivels.
These new swivels provide superior strength and outstanding
durability in a petite, compact package.

As a native Floridian and professional fisherman for the most part of
my life, I have definitely caught my fair share of dolphin. In south
Florida, as a mate or captain on any offshore charter boat you quickly
realize one of the most popular questions that customers ask, “how’s
the dolphin fishing”? It seems as though everyone wants to go home with
a couple bags of fresh mahi fillets and you really can’t blame them.

In this issue we will expand on an aspect of everyday salt water
fishing that I believe most anglers take for granted, gaff selection
and basic gaffing tips. In my early days of fishing, I never really
gave this particular subject much thought. My early experiences
consisted primarily of fishing from a drift boat that my brother worked
on and it was customary for the mates to cater to your every need. All
I did was show up at the dock early enough in the hopes of getting a
good spot along the rail and prayed I would get a decent rod.

Throughout the years I’ve been fortunate enough to have been employed
as a mate on many of south Florida’s top sport fishing charter boats.
In my opinion, I have also worked for some of the best captains in the
business. Most are not only awesome fisherman, but also very
disciplined about the condition of their boat and tackle.
Perfectly clean engine rooms, immaculate interiors, and overly
organized tackle centers are the norm on most tournament sport fishing
yachts. In addition, I have always maintained an open relationship with
each captain. Having numerous conversations about fishing techniques,
cockpit safety, and day in and day out job expectations.

Simply put, release clips allow near-shore and offshore anglers the
ability to thoroughly cover multiple facets of the sport fishing arena.
Most commonly utilized in conjunction with outriggers, downriggers,
kites and to position flat lines, the concept is quite basic. Your
running line extends from your rod tip, through the release clip and
into the playing field. The tension mechanism on the clip allows you to
adjust the point at which a strike snaps the release open, freeing your
running line so you can fight that sailfish, marlin, or dolphin with no
interferences.

AS SEEN IN THE 2004 FALL ISSUE
I unexpectedly received a frantic call from Capt Mike Genoun on a
typical sweltering South Florida summer day. I can’t remember his exact
words, but he was talking a thousand miles an hour and I believe it
went something like this: “Hey Bobby, a buddy of mine just called me on
my cell. He’s six miles off beatin’ on 10 to 15 pound dolphin! Wanna’
go?” Other than having a sword trip scheduled for late that evening, my
afternoon was clear, so my response was a quick “when & where?”

Second only to local weather conditions, the effect of moonlight
represents the most significant influence in the capture of swordfish.
Anglers who are successful at targeting these billfish control key
variables and take advantage of specific characteristics. The overall
concept that swordfish concentrate their feeding activity around
specific periods requires that you take advantage of the effects
moonlight has out on the swordfish grounds.

An oxygen infusion system may be the solution to your baitfish nightmares.
All living things require oxygen for their very existence, fish are no
exception. Unlike mammals, fish have to breathe in an extremely dense
atmosphere, a function which consumes up to 20% of their total energy.
With each gulp, seawater is fed through the fish’s gills where oxygen
is extracted and diffused into the blood.
