“The Second Leg of The Bahamas Wahoo Championship”

Once again the top wahoo fishing boats in the Hemisphere gathered at Chub Cay Club, Berry Islands, Bahamas, to compete in the second leg of the 2007-2008 Bahamas Wahoo Championship. At the Captain’s meeting they were warmly welcomed to Chub Cay by Chub Cay owners Kaye Pearson and Bob Moss.

Following some gusty, windy conditions prior to the tournament, the first day of fishing turned out to be flat calm, a rather unusual occurrence so early in February. “Fishin A-Loan”, a 55’ Hatteras owned by Kevin Marsh, of Sycamore, Illinois led all boats after the first day of fishing by weighing-in a 55 pound wahoo and a 41 pound wahoo for a cumulative total of 96 points. Their 55 pound wahoo was also the Heaviest Wahoo of the day weighed in. Nine other boats brought qualifying wahoo (over 20 pounds) to the scales.

The weather conditions for the second day of fishing were short of absolutely perfect. Sunny and warm, cloudless skies and flat calm seas greeted the boats as they headed out to the fishing grounds. Leading all boats on the second day was Ft. Lauderdale businessman Whit Hudson on board his spectacular 72’ Merritt “Business Stinks”. Weighing in a 63 pound wahoo and a 29 pound wahoo for a total of 92 points, he narrowly edged out Basil Goulandris’ Nassau- based “Zephyros” by three points, 92 to 89. The evening culminated with a spectacular wahoo buffet presented by Chef Sands. Anglers had donated part of their catch to the Club and Chef Sands prepared the wahoo in SEVEN different ways; Fritters, Cajun, Blackened, Minced, Barbecued, Curried, and the piece d’resistance- a spectacular coconut crusted wahoo dish.

As all boats headed out for the third and final day of fishing, “Zephyros” led the fleet with 153 points, followed very closely by “Fishin A-Loan” (152 points) and “Business Stinks” 133 points. For the third day in a row the weather conditions were absolutely perfect and the days winner was “Cloud Nine”, a 52’ Viking owned by Doug Dunlap of Longwood, Florida. “Cloud Nine” weighed in the Heaviest wahoo of the tournament, a 77 pound specimen, along with a 57 pound wahoo accumulating 134 points for the day.

In a very close competition, “Fishin A-Loan” won the tournament with their top five heaviest wahoo weighing 180 points. Only five points behind, “Savanna Lynn” came in second place with 175 points and third place went to “Cloud Nine” with 161 points.

The event culminated with a fabulous steak dinner put on by Chef Sands underneath the new mammoth events tent which has been set up in the great lawn of Chub Cay.
