Thank God. It’s finally that time of year and the big game tournament trail is in full swing. I have been fishing marlin tournaments since I was only 10 months old and still enjoy it to this day. They tell me my first event though, was not a very pleasant one. The seas averaged 10' to 12'. I’m sure I got tossed around the cockpit during that rough ride. I have spent many hours waiting for that one big blue marlin bite. I remember plenty of times sitting around watching the lures in the water and never even seeing a fish, but when one of those beautiful marlin did pop up in the spread, it sure got my heart pumping!

Some of the best days of my life have been spent in the Bahamas. We always visited various out-islands while competing in the Bahamas Billfish Championship. Along with fishing, I enjoyed walking on the beach, swimming and searching for new haunts. Sometimes, I really cut loose and howled at the moon.

Not many people get the chance to fish as much as I have, so I consider myself very blessed. On one occasion, my mom came fishing with us. It was the greatest day ever!!! After only a short time of fishing, we hooked a small fish and I watched her closely as she released her first blue marlin. Afterwards, everyone settled back in as we resumed trolling. The spread looked awesome and all we had to do was wait for another strike. I’m very good at waiting.

Just as I was snoozing off, the left rigger popped and the shiny reel began to scream. I remember being so excited as the giant fish leaped through the air. It was an unbelievable moment. My mom quickly grabbed the rod and settled back into the fighting chair. The other lines were quickly cleared and the fight was on. After what seemed like a long time, there was a huge fish lying in the water next to the boat. Since we were competing in a tournament and no other fish had been landed that day, we measured and kept the fish. With my big mouth, I helped get the fish under control as it was brought through the transom door. More than a few times they hollered at me to shut up, but I didn’t listen. It was fun watching everyone hugging. They were all so happy that this might be the winning fish. We again put the lures back out and continued our search for another trophy. As the fishing trip came to a close, a familiar voice could be heard over the VHF stating that it was now time for lines out, at least I think that’s what they said.

We started heading for the marina to weight in our fish. There was only one other marlin that we were concerned about beating. We finally arrived at the dock and the official announcement came in at 512 lbs! What a once in a life time experience! Everyone was so happy for us and I was so proud of my mom! As we walk down the dock, we were being congratulated by everyone. I am a little embarrassed to say it, but I was so happy I just couldn’t contain myself. They still laugh about me going right there on the dock. Believe it or not, no one even seemed to notice. The awards banquet was awesome and watching mom holding her trophy that night made me so happy. We didn’t take first place but did receive second, and also an award for top female angler. We all took advantage of the well deserved rest that night and prepared to leave the wonderful island first thing in the morning.

I have spent many days on the water and have traveled to many far away destinations. I’ve spent countless hours trolling for big blue marlin, dolphin, wahoo and tuna. I even enjoy anchoring up and fishing for snapper and grouper, but it’s just being on the boat that makes me the happiest. Nowadays, we don’t compete in many tournaments but still do our share of fishing. A recent set back has caused me to be out of the loop for awhile, as I injured my leg and had to have some surgery done. I’m well on my way to a full recovery though and I dream of continuing my adventures out on the deep blue sea until my very last dying day.

You see, my mom and dad have taught me so many wonderful things. The meaning of true companionship, trust and love, shines in our relationship everyday. My name is Darby. I’m an eight year old Labrador retriever who just happens to be lucky enough to have the best parents anyone could ask for. I want to thank them for all they have done for me and for the unforgettable experiences they’ve allowed me to share with them. Thanks mom & dad. You guys rule!
