Squid chains...

As far as color is concerned, artificial squid are available in nearly every pattern under the sun with green and natural tones popular choices. However, the general consensus amongst the highest ranking crews is that if they could only pick one color squid chain; it would surely be pink. No one can say for sure, but maybe it’s because pink perfectly mimics natural squid ‘glowing’ in the bright sunlight.

Squid chains... Good as gold!
As a rule, keep the chain skimming the surface on the face of the wake and don’t be overly concerned if the leading squid barely touches the water.

Even as technology and lure designs continue to evolve, we can all rest assured that the primitive squid chain will be a “go-to” teaser for big-game anglers worldwide well into the future. That’s a guarantee!

While daisy chains of all sorts can be purchased fully rigged at your favorite tackle retailer, rigging your own squid chain is a simple three step process.

Required materials:

  • Five squid in your choice of color (stick with 6” baits when targeting small to mid-size game fish such as sailfish and blackfin tuna and 9” or 12” squid when specifically targeting blue marlin and large yellowfin tuna).
  • One chugger type lure in a contrasting color.
  • Six to eight feet of 300lb. clear mono leader.
  • Appropriate size crimps & crimping tool.
  • 1/8 oz. egg sinkers.

Step 1) Affix a crimp to the very end of the leader material before threading the opposite end of the leader through a rigging bead and into your choice of trailing lure. Be sure to thread the leader into the lure from the bottom up.

Step 2) At even intervals on the remaining leader material, affix a crimp...slide on an egg sinker...thread on a squid...affix a crimp...slide on an egg sinker...thread on a squid….etc….etc…etc. Again, be sure to thread the leader into the squid from the bottom up.

Step 3) Complete your squid chain by crimping a small loop in the end of the leader. Leading deckhands go to the extent of protecting the loop with chafing gear or a thimble, though the extra step is not mandatory.
