So far US Ameribank, TA Mahoney Company, Power-Pole, HOPCO, Gasparilla Properties, La Segunda Central Bakery, Ravioli Company, Kissinger, Campo & Associates, Tony H2O Photography, Florida Pool Authority, Jeff Keel- Attorney at Law, BMC Software, South Tampa Financial, Easy Decals, and Saltwater Angler Magazine have all committed to helping make the 2012 GMC the best yet! If you are interested in participating, sponsorship opportunities, or making an in-kind donation for the silent auction or raffle, please contact a member of the tournament committee.

The tournament will start with the Captain’s Meeting Friday October 12th at Miller’s Dockside at 7pm, (aka Boca Grande Marina) and will include dinner, beer, drinks, the raffle and silent auction. “Lines-In” will be called directly after the meeting and anglers can begin to fill their card of 1 Snook (catch-photo-release), 2 Reds (catch-weigh-release) and 4 Sea Trout (catch-weigh-optional release). The highest total weight scored will determine the GMC Overall Winner and Calcutta’s for each of the three species, the Juan Gil Award and the Top Lady Angler Award will also be awarded.

The Gil Memorial Classic was founded in 2006 to honor Juan and Roberto Gil of Tampa, in Juan’s favorite fishing destination- Boca Grande, FL. Juan was an intelligent, hard working, and caring individual. He made no enemies and brought only joy to those around him. In 2003, Juan was tragically involved in a fatal automobile accident. He was a good son who spent the last years of his life by his father’s side as he fought against cancer. Roberto Gil, Juan’s father, was a wonderful person who loved his family. To everyone’s dismay, he lost his long battle. Although father and son have been reunited and are able to get back to trading fishing and baseball stories, they are deeply missed. This year’s event will once again benefit The Barrier Island Parks Society, a non-profit organization providing support to Boca Grande and affiliated barrier island state parks including Gasparilla, Cayo Costa, Don Pedro and Stump Pass, their lighthouses, exhibits, personnel and natural assets.

Remember the field is limited to 25 boats, so don’t sleep on it!
