Women remember their first.
Like our male counterparts, female anglers, too, find the lure of BIG fish simply to great to ignore. Join me on a brief adventure as I recap my personal quest for a true trophy.
If you've ever had the muscle-aching privilege of hooking a giant tarpon, then you know the shear exhilaration and breathtaking thrill that comes along with testing yourself and your tackle to the very limits in a battle against one of the most sought after game fish in the world. Hard-fighting and hard-jumping, glamorous silver kings rule the inshore waterways!

A little reminder to the fishermen in our lives….
The festive season is well underway, and soon, all of us
will be regretting overdoing it on delicious turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie. Wow,
it’s really hard to believe, but it’s already time to start thinking about
gifts for that special someone in our lives. That’s right, every man's favorite
time of the year - holiday shopping!

Love those lines.
There is no question about it; when the snook bite is on, inshore
light-tackle fishing is as good as it gets! September 1 marks the
highly anticipated re-opening of snook season, and anglers throughout
South Florida have been anxiously waiting for this day to come for
quite some time. Snook are Florida’s most sought after shallow water
game fish, and are a perfect target for female anglers of all ages and
all skill levels. Personally, they are one of my all-time favorite fish
to target. Watching a snook engulf live bait or crash a surface plug
for the first time leaves you with vivid memories that stick with you
for the rest of your life. These fish are also notorious for their
stealthy ambush tactics. At times, they seem to appear out of nowhere,
and disappear just as fast.

Women who are interested
in taking up saltwater fishing should know that when it comes to the
ultimate challenge, sight-fishing to South Florida’s most
sought-after game fish is as good as the sport gets. During anytime
of the year, fishermen prowling the beaches from Sarasota down to
Marco Island, will find the crystal clear water along the Gulf’s
pristine shoreline provides an angling paradise like few others, but
it’s during May through July, when sight-fishing to giant silver
kings is in the spotlight, that excitement and adrenaline levels
soar!

Anyone who has ever spent any length of time fishing anywhere in
Florida’s vast backcountry will tell you shallow water angling provides
a special kind of tranquility which words can barely describe. It’s an
exciting world hidden deep in the mangrove forests where GPS machines
and fancy fish finders will not come into play. Backcountry fishing is
truly a “get away from it all” experience, leaving you completely
mesmerized by the surrounding natural beauty. What’s even better,
because you’re generally fishing protected waterways only a few feet
deep, you’re not affected nearly as much by the elements as compared to
being out in the open ocean, so it almost always calm and quiet.

AS SEEN IN THE JAN/FEB 2006 ISSUE
Looking back, I guess I never really put a great deal of thought into
what my life would become once I took on the title of Mrs. Fishing
Guide. Sure, considering I love fishing and the outdoors myself, I
thought about how wonderful it would be to have a personal captain and
how exciting it would be to have a fishing boat at my fingertips. What
I failed to think about was that it would cost me dearly to live in my
own paradise.

When it comes to tournament fishing, the ‘Beastie Girls’ from Miami,
are proof positive that women can be formidable adversaries in the
predominately male world of competitive offshore fishing. These three
women, whose team name came from the fact that they fish on The Beast,
a 27’ tournament equipped World Class Cat, have had to fight more than
just fish to prove that they have what it takes to be winners. The male
teams that these ladies compete against learned the hard way that the
‘Beastie Girls’ can outplay, outlast and out fish their opposition more
times than they care to admit.

When the “Ladies, Let’s Go Fishing!” organization started planning their
hands-on seminar series for women, they had plenty of doubters. “People
laughed when they heard our initial concept,” said the program’s founder,
Betty Bauman, remembering the program’s beginning seven years ago. “Some men
just could not understand how their wives could possibly learn more about fishing
from anyone other than them.”

AS SEEN IN THE WINTER 2004-05 ISSUE
Some would say that perhaps no other fish in the sea has been more
misunderstood than the mysterious shark. Other than makos, few
recreational anglers ever actually targeted sharks. Then in the early
70’s the ever so popular movie entitled "Jaws" hit theaters across the
nation: soon after a whole new era in recreational angling began.
Suddenly, everyone wanted to target these intriguing monsters.

Lady scores a Super Grand Slam!
Hi, my name is Michele DeMartino. I live adjacent to a lake in northern
New Jersey where I usually fish for largemouth bass, though my true
passion is fishing for tarpon. Twice a year I travel down to Florida to
fish with one of the greatest guides I have ever met, his name is Capt.
Carl Ball. Capt. Carl knows I’m obsessed with tarpon and that I can't
get enough of the mighty silver kings. You see, that’s where all of
this started so from one lady angler to the rest of the fishing world,
I know you‘ll appreciate this short story.

More so today then ever before, women are taking advantage of outdoor
pursuits for their own pleasure. Women are no longer joining their male
counterparts in outdoor activities just to spend more time with them.
Females of all ages are becoming more active and adventurous then ever
before and no where is this truer than in the angling world.

Men need not apply.
It would really be great if a larger number of women entered
and competed in professional fishing tournaments. The sport of
tournament angling for females is now more conducive than ever before.
Luckily for us ladies, fish, however brilliant they may seem at times,
don’t know who is on the other end of the line, so the playing field is
always equal.

Fly fishing is becoming increasingly popular

What is it that makes fly fishing so appealing to the lady angler?
After speaking to many female fly casters I came to the conclusion that
one thing is for certain -- passion plays a major role in their quest
to become lost in the solitude of fly fishing.

Permit, like their miniature cousins the pompano, are actually members of the jack family. And just like their jack relatives, permit are extremely powerful fighters. This characteristic alone is one of the many reasons that I have recently added permit to my “top three” wish list of favorite fish to catch.
Once thought of as primarily a flats target stalked exclusively by
skilled fly-fishermen just as they do bonefish and tarpon, today,
anglers of all sorts have discovered big numbers of permit spawning on
the offshore reefs and wrecks where they make easy targets for
fishermen of all ages and all skill levels. This includes women new to
the sport.

Hey guys! Yes, YOU! Does your wife or girlfriend despise the fact that
you’re always gone fishing? Does she continually ask you why fiddling
with your tackle and gear is such a priority? Does she give you static
about the amount of time you spend on the water? If you answered “Yes”
to any of the above, I’ll bet you wish you knew a simple way to get her
off your back. Well, I do. It’s called, “Let’s go fishing!”

Female anglers account for a fast growing segment of the sport fishing
community. More and more women of all ages are learning to enjoy
fishing. Statistics prove that there are now over 17 million female
anglers registered in the United States alone. They are quickly
catching on to the fact that sport fishing is not an extreme sport all
about strength. It is a sport that requires more finesse and patience
than anything else – two traits women seem to have plenty of.
