Monday morning found the Old Town on the roof of the Sienna. They were heading to the Banana River Lagoon. The owner wanted to do a feasibility study, paddling the 16' canoe in the wind with a kayak paddle. The trip was too to the fifth power. It was too hot. The water was too high, too dirty. It was too windy. There were too many clouds. In spite of all that I caught too redfis... Read More

October is historically the top all-around month to fish the Sebastian Area. Water temperatures begin to drop back into the optimum range for most of the resident and migratory fish species. Baitfish numbers are at a peak and the predators are feeding heavily.Indian River Lagoon- As the grass beds have rebounded, so have seatrout numbers in the Sebastian area. Trout of all size... Sunday- Went canoeing with sister Cheryl, Tammy, Mike C., Jeff the crematory builder, and several others on the Econ. The water was high enough that Cheryl and I were able to paddle the canoe up on to the foot bridge that spans the river in the state forest. Because of the high water I didn't bring a rod, but Mike C. got one small bass in two days of casting.Tuesday- Steve and Ja... Read More

Our season is winding down here at the Lodge at Whale Pass. The berries are done, much of the staff has already left, and soon I will be heading back to the heat and humidity of central Florida. I hope there are tarpon around! But thinking about future tarpon possibilities is not living in the moment.Nick Colantonio sent me another haiku- Six pinks on one fly. Now tattered. ... Read More

September always brings a welcome change to the fishing of the Sebastian Area. The mullet run will help all aspects of fishing both inside and outside Sebastian Inlet. Shorter days and tropical rains will begin to cool the waters of the lagoon allowing trout and reds to spend more time in the shallows feeding. The fall migration of prey and predators alike will give anglers more options ... Read More

During such free time as comes my way here at Whale Pass, I have been reading Peter Matthiessen's The Snow Leopard. Published back in 1978, it is a brilliant piece of work, masterfully written and full of profound insights into human nature and the fleeting nature of one individual's life.At one point Matthiessen writes, "Amazingly, we take for granted that instinct for survival,... Sunday Paul and Garrett Santini joined me for a day's fishing on the Indian River Lagoon. I somehow got the idea they were fly fishers. They were not. Thank God I brought a spin rod backup. Garrett, who attends Lehigh University, had once had a fly fishing lesson. I augmented it enough that he could fish with the fly rod while dad used the spinner. We missed a few strikes but it was toug... Read More
