Legend has it that sportfishing in the United States and the Avalon Tuna Club was born out of the bluefin fishery off the coast of Santa Catalina Island. Founded in 1898, the Tuna Club is the oldest fishing club in the United States and was renowned for drawing dignitaries and celebrities alike to the island for its promise of world class tuna fishing. However, around 1935 the game fish that ushered in the sport disappeared.
It wasn’t until the mid-2010s that big bluefin reappeared near Catalina and this time in a spectacle rivaling the golden era of the past. This film explores the mysterious migration of the fish, how we can protect them, and the bonds forged by the anglers who spend their lives chasing them. One question still remains unanswered. When will they disappear again?
