Last night, Saturday, April 12, 2014, Mr Pete Polen and his 17 year old son, (Just Graduated from High School) met me at Tarpon World marina at 11:30. PM. We boarded my Jones Brothers Cape Fisherman “Fly Reel” and headed directly to “Tarpon Belly Flats”. After five minutes of instruction, both anglers cast their fly to an area where I had spotted some Tarpon feeding, shortly after the younger Polen hooked a 80 pound Tarpon. Fifteen minutes later we got the leader and I released the first Tarpon of the night.

Fishing was steady for the next 3 hours, each angler jumped and fought tarpon on fly. Pete hooked a giant female Silver King, over 170 pounds. That fish pulled the boat around, did a jump where we got to see her giant size, then took off at warp speed. About 2 minutes later she had run off over 300 yards of backing, (at 6 pounds of drag), came to the knot on the arbor, and broke the 20 pound tippet, this was my biggest Tarpon so far this season.

We finished jumping The Polen fly anglers, combined for a total of 6 Tarpon jumped and they caught two Tarpon on fly, neither had ever fly fished for Tarpon in the past. That is why I love my job, wish you were here, stay tuned for more fly fishing reports.
