The Future is Now

Technology never ceases to amaze and with the latest advancements, anglers have more at their fingertips than ever thought imaginable. While there are an excessive amount of apps available for download providing anglers and boaters with incredibly powerful tools, the industry’s top electronics manufacturers have also developed proprietary apps that enable wireless operation to mirror and control compatible multifunction displays with the touch or swipe of a smart device.

The newest displays from Raymarine, Furuno and Humminbird feature built-in Wi-Fi, which make it easier than ever to transmit NMEA navigation data to a tablet or smartphone. With these free apps, you can effectively transform your handheld device into a fully functional remote control or viewing platform, providing users with the ability to set waypoints, view thermal cameras, electronic charts and engine data, activate entertainment systems, adjust radar and sonar, and much more. Basically, almost anything you can do on the MFD can be accomplished remotely through your handheld device. What’s common among top manufacturers is that controlling critical vessel operations from the scaled down screen of a smartphone isn’t recommended

Lowrance, Simrad and Garmin have also developed free apps to control and mirror multifunction displays, but compatible units don’t have built in wireless LAN capabilities and require the installation of an aftermarket wireless module. No matter what unit or brand you prefer, the ability to control and view data from a multifunction display from anywhere on the boat is incredibly advantageous. Whether you want full control of your helm station’s multifunction display without the permanent installation of a costly second station, or simply want to see what’s on the fishfinder when you’re in the cockpit, the latest apps give anglers and boaters a completely new level of freedom.
